Les Ferdinand does not believe Man United are favourites to win Europa League, tips Besiktas as outsiders

Former Tottenham and Besiktas striker Les Ferdinand has revealed his favourite to win the Europa League this season.

The bookmakers may have United as their favourite to lift the trophy but Ferdinand revealed that he is tipping Besiktas to win the competition.

Speaking at the Futbol Zirvesi conferred in Istanbul, Ferdinand was asked if he thinks Besiktas have a chance to win the Europa League with teams like United still left in the competitions.

“I watched Besiktas against Olympiakos, they deserved to win in the manner they did,” he said.

“Lyon will be tough but if they have what it takes to win and they can go all the way and win it.

“They may not be everyones favourites with teams like United left in the competition but they have a fantastic manager and a very good team.”

Ferdinand joined Besiktas on loan in 1988 and became a cult figure despite spending just one season at the club.

The former England international scored 14 times in 24 games for the Black Eagles and played an important role in winning the Turkish Cup.

Besiktas will take on Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals while United will face Belgium giants Anderlecht.

In the other quarter-final ties Ajax face Schalke and Genk take on Celta Vigo.

The quarter-final games will be played next month.

The Istanbul giants are currently first in the Turkish league, two points ahead of second placed Basaksehir.
