Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed the reason behind Emre Can’s recent drop in form, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Per the source, the 22-year-old’s contract negotiations with the club have recently stalled.
However, manager Klopp has insisted that the contract talks have not affected Can’s performances.
Instead, the German tactician revealed that Can has been carrying a number of injuries in recent months.
“Emre has for the first time had no problems with his calves,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo.
“We need him. In different parts of the game he is really consistent for us, and Chelsea was his best game for a few weeks, that is for sure.
“He has this calf issue which we are still looking into and trying to find out why. Is it his back? Is it his ankle?
“It lets him stay on the pitch but it makes him struggle a little bit. We could have said ‘stay off for two or three weeks’, but we don’t have a lot of options.
“We’ve tried to work on this while he is playing. It would be nice if we have now found the exact reason and the solution. Everyone could see the difference when he’s able to play without issues.”
Can joined Liverpool’s pre-season camp at the beginning of the season late after participating in Euro 2016.
The 22-year-old was part of the Germany national team squad who were knocked out by the hosts France in the semi-finals.
Can has made a total of 17 apperances for Liverpool this season and has 18 months remaining on his contract with the Reds.
Liverpool take on relegation battlers Hull City at the KC Stadium today. The Reds will find themselves at least 12 points behind leaders Chelsea if they fail to record a victory.
