Klopp was quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying: “It was not the easiest decision of my life because it was not too long ago that Emre was outstanding against Chelsea.
“But in this game Gini showed a really good combination of an aggressive, defensive midfielder plus a creative, offensive midfield player.”
Klopp also underlined that Wijnaldum has formed an impressive partnership with team captain Jordan Henderson.
“We then have all of them available at a high level and I have to take the decision,” he added.
“Gini has been really good for us and has formed a good partnership with Jordan Henderson. It felt good.”
Can has come under fire from sections of the media and Liverpool fans following a dip in form.
Wijnaldum joined the Reds on a £25 million move from Newcastle United over the summer.
Can had started the last six Premier League games until he was dropped for Wijnaldum against Spurs.
It remains to be seen whether Klopp will stick or twist going into the Premier League clash against reigning champions Leicester City on Monday 27 February.
Can is currently facing an uncertain future at Liverpool, the Germany international of Turkish origin has yet to extend his contract which runs out in 2018. Meanwhile Adam Lallana and Philippe Countinho both recently signed new deals.
