When Emre Can was named in Jurgen Klopp’s starting eleven on Saturday, Liverpool fans took to social media in their droves to voice their discontent.
The 24-year-old ended up playing the full 90 minutes during the Reds 2-0 win over Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United.
The victory sent the Reds above Manchester United into second place. United can, however, move back into second spot with a win over Crystal Palace tonight.
Can is one yellow card away from receiving a two-match suspension, and Liverpool fans were surprised about his inclusion in Klopp’s starting eleven, considering Can is on nine bookings.
A tenth booking would have seen him miss Liverpool’s encounter with their bitter rivals Man United at Old Trafford next weekend.
Good team that hopefully emre can don’t get a yellow today bit worried about that pic.twitter.com/fwbGElNxLY

If Emre Can gets a yellow card today he will miss next weeks trip to Old Trafford.

Emre Can on 9 yellows so I doubt he'll be risked tomorrow as a booking means he'd miss United. Wijnaldum injured. Suggests a midfield of Henderson, the Ox and Lallana.

I'm Surprised Emre Can isn't Rested today I thought maybe Lallana would of Started

Why is Klopp playing Emre Can 2day?
I know GWij is in the toilet but if he receives a yellow card 2day doesn't he miss the Utd gm?
What's Klopp thinking?#LFC— Nasman (@NasiruRashid7) March 3, 2018
Emre Can starts. Big risk. Needs to avoid a yellow today so that he isn’t suspended for the United match.

This is the team I would play to, little bit worried that if emre can plays and he gets a yellow card we really need him against United https://t.co/ABGy4Ng2th

Fortunately, the combative midfielder managed to avoid a yellow card and is available for selection this weekend.
Can’s long-term future at Liverpool is still in doubt after failing to put pen-to-paper on a new deal. The Germany international has entered the final three months of his contract.
