Liverpool legend Graeme Souness makes shock comparison with current team to Istanbul heroes following 2-1 Man City win

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has issued a reaction to his former sides win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds recorded a 2-1 win over Man City at the Etihad Stadium to book their place in the semi-finals.

Speaking after the final whistle, Souness stated that the current Liverpool team is better than the one that won the Champions League in 2005 in Istanbul. Liverpool pulled off one of the biggest shocks in football when they came back from 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan, to win on penalties in Istanbul.

“For me, this is a better team than the one that won in Istanbul,” Souness told Irish channel TV3 Sport.

“This is a better team. They’re more of a team, they’re more solid, they’ve got more punch up front.

“There’s no perfect team but this is a team that could easily win this competition.

“If you go back – I was like everybody else who is a Liverpool supporter – at the start of the season I was taking getting into the top four, maybe get into a cup final.

“As the season’s gone on, the team itself has grown in confidence and they’ve no fear of going to that stadium tonight.

“At the start of the game the camera panned on Trent Alexander-Arnold. Is he 19, 20? It didn’t look as if it was going to bother him at all and that’s how it turned out.

“This is a team that should, fairly, stand on this stage. It will only stand them in good stead going forward.”

Liverpool will find out who they will face in the semi-final’s on Friday afternoon when the draw is conducted at UEFA’s headquarters in Switzerland.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are back in action this weekend in the Premier League as they host Bournemouth at Anfield.
