Liverpool released the following statement on the official club website: “Liverpool FC would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton and player transfers between the two clubs. We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.

“We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”

A source close to Fenerbahce revealed to Turkish-Football that the Reds have been keeping tabs on Kjaer throughout the season.

Kjaer is on the Liverpool shortlist and enquiries have been made regarding his availability.

Fenerbahce want £15 million for their star man who has another two-years remaining on his contract.

The Denmark international is an important first team player for the Istanbul giants but they are under investigation from Financial Fair Play and would be forced to consider an offer that matches their valuation.

Kjaer will get married to Eline Gollert in Rome over the next few weeks and is expected to make a decision on his future on his return to Istanbul.

Kjaer’s agent Mikkel Beck recently revealed that there is a lot of interest in his client when asked about Inter Milan making an offer.

“Kjær has a contract with Fenerbahçe for another two years, and if anyone wants to do so, they must talk to the Turkish club,” Beck told FC Inter News.

“I won’t tell you if there if an offer for him, but I can only add that there is a lot of interest and that is normal for a player of his calibre.”
