Reports in Turkey claimed that Newcastle United made an offer for Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum.
The Takvim newspaper report that the Magpies made an offer for the 27-year-old and that they have in talks with Liverpool.
The Chronicle reported that the Magpies are not actually interested in signing their former midfielder.
The Netherlands international will not be joining the club he left in 2016 for Liverpool.
The latest development will serve as a boost for Fenerbahce who have been pushing for a move.
CNN Turk have reported that Fenerbahce sporting director Damien Comolli is set to travel to England for talks with Wijnaldum’s agent.
The midfielder is reported to be unsettled at Liverpool following the transfers of Naby Keita and Fabinho.
With James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also competing for a midfield role there Wijnaldum may have to fight for his place in the side.
Saying that the same was said about him last season but he ended up making 50 appearances.
Wijnaldum would be joining his former PSV manager Phillip Cocu if he were to join Fenerbahce.
Wijnaldum is currently training with Liverpool over the pre-season period but has not been playing as he is not ready yet.
“I hope Joel (can play), it looks like that,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to liverpoolfc.com. “Virgil can play.
“Gini was not in training this morning; that’s pre-season, sometimes they feel a little bit here or a little bit there and the medical department tell me: ‘not today’. I don’t know if he will be in tomorrow, we will know that a little bit later.”
Liverpool signed the 27-year-old on a £24.75m [Transfermarkt] move in 2016 and he does have another three-years remaining on his contract.
