Liverpool team news: Netherlands international tipped to be a regular starter

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has tipped the Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum to secure a starting place in Jurgen Klopp’s starting line-up.

The former striker believes Wijnaldum is a stronger option in midfield over Emre Can.

Aldridge believes there is ‘no contest‘ between Wijnaldum and Can, as long as the Netherlands international performs to his full potential.

Can has struggled for form at Liverpool this season after returning late to pre-season training following Euro 2016. The 22-year-old has also been hampered by injury issues spanning back to last summer.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has alternated between Wijnaldum and Can for the Reds’ previous two Premier League encounters.

“There is one place up for grabs in that Liverpool midfield, and it is between Wijnaldum and Emre Can,” John Aldridge told the Liverpool Echo.

“It’s up to Wijnaldum to deliver this kind of performance on a regular basis, and if he does then there is no contest.

“He and Jordan Henderson set the tone for the game against Tottenham.

“We know they are strong in midfield with Dembele and Wanyama, but we won the battle, we were up for it physically and that made a huge difference. It was great to see.”

Emre Can has two assists and three goals to his name in 27 apperances for Liverpool this season.

The Reds take on Leicester City in the Premier League next weekend.
