Liverpool's Emre Can tipped to take over Steven Gerrard role

Emre Can

Germany u21 manager Horst Hrubesch has tipped Emre Can to to take over Steven Gerrard’s role in the Liverpool midfield this season.

Can played in midfield for Hrubesch’s Germany u21 side during the 2015 European Championship’s in the Czech Republic.

The 21-year-old scored in his sides opening game and provided an assist in the second. Germany u21’s were eliminated in the semi finals suffering a humiliating 5-0 defeat against Portugal.

“I was just in Liverpool. It was confirmed that Emre could so assume the role of Gerrard in midfield. Emre definitely has leadership,” Hrubesch told Bild.

Can is expected to play in midfield for Liverpool this season following the departure of Gerrard to the MLS side LA Galaxy.

However, with competition from Jordan Henderson and James Milner the former Bayer Leverkusen man could face a battle for a starting position.

The Germany u21 international made a total of 27 appearances for the Premier League outfit last season and also featured in the FA Cup and Europa League.
