Man City Ace Jeered And Booed By Germany Fans after Mesut Ozil’s retirement

Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan received a hostile reception from a section of Germany fans on Thursday evening.

Gundogan was included in Joachim Low’s 23-man squad which took on World Champions France.

Germany were held to a 0-0 draw by Les Bleus at the Allianz Arena.

Gundogan started the game on the bench but was brought on after 67 minutes for Leon Gortezka.

And coming on he was welcomed with a series of whistles and jeers.

However, Gundogan had preempted this reaction but insisted he would do his best for Germany regardless.

“I hope that I will be welcomed with open arms – first and foremost from my team-mates and DFB (German Football Association) officials,” Gundogan told German newspaper WAZ.

“And then I hope that there will be no whistles in the stadium against me.

“If it happens, then I’ll have to face it. It will be a test, but I can promise that I will do my best.”

Both Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan were targeted by the German press after posing for a photo with Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ozil ended up retiring from international football citing racism and discrimination.

Gundogan, however, opted to stick with the national team. The 27-year-old has established himself as a first-team regular with Manchester City.

The Citizens are back in action on September 15 when they take on Fulham at the Etihad stadium.
