Man City star fails to make travelling squad ahead of West Ham clash in

Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan has not been included in the travelling squad ahead of the friendly against West Ham in Iceland today.

Gundogan did join City for the pre-season US tour but did not feature in any of the International Championship Cup games.

The midfielder of Turkish origin has recovered from injury and been training with the team after returning from his knee injury.

The 26-year-old has not played a competitive game since December.

The Germany international was hoping to play during the City tour but now is doubtful about the start of the season.

Gundogan said that such difficulties take their toll: “It is heavy mentally to accept that,” he told BBC Sport .

“It is really hard always to fall and fight your way back. You feel good and feel ready, then you get the next kick.

“The worst part is behind me now. I want to feel ready when I am fully back. I want to feel safe and confident. I don’t mind if it is two weeks or six.”

The clash against the Hammers could mark Bernardo Silva’s first appearance in a City shirt since arriving this summer.

The game will be played at the Laugardalsvollur Stadium and will kick off at 3pm BST today.

City will be looking to build on a successful US tour where they recorded victories over Real Madrid and Tottenham.
