Man City Star Ilkay Gudogan Reacts To Drawing Liverpool In The Champions League Quarter-Finals

Manchester City star midfiedler Ilkay Gundogan is no stranger to the Champions League.

He reached the final with Borussia Dortmund back in 2014.

Coincidently Jurgen Klopp he was playing under the stewardship of Jurgen Klopp at the time.

Klopp who is now in charge of Liverpool will take on his former pupil in the Champions League quarter-final.

Gundogan is not feeling intimiated, he feels every team in the last eight deserves respect and that to be the best you have to play the best.

“At the end you need to play against the best to win this trophy,” said Gundogan.

“You must compete against the best to get to the final and, of course, to win it.”

The 27-year-old also reflected on the Champions League final he lost with Dortmund and that his main target is to now go one step further and win the competition.

“I was lucky enough to play in the Champions League final in 2013 with Borussia Dortmund, unfortunately we lost, so obviously I can’t wait to try and get to a final and win it this time – that is my main target,” he said.

“Fortunately, we won the Carabao Cup and we are very happy about it, to gain our first trophy quite early in the season. This is now in our hands, nobody can take it away.

“For us, this is just the beginning. We are in good shape to face the elite clubs in Europe, but I wouldn’t say we are there just yet.

“We need to compete with teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich – the biggest teams on a regular basis, so it doesn’t make a difference who you get at this stage.”

Gundogan is one of three Turks left in the competition, the others being Liverpool midfielder of Turkish origin Emre Can and Roma star winger Cengiz Under.

There will be at least one player of Turkish origin in the semi-final.

Besiktas made it to the Last 16 stage but were knocked out by Bayern Munich, 8-1 on aggreagte.

The first leg of the Liverpool vs Man City clash will be played at Anfield on 4 April 2018.
