Man City Star Recalled To Germany National Team Squad Despite World Cup Controversy

Germany kick off their UEFA National League campaign against World Cup champions France on Thursday.

German head coach Joachim Low has called up Ilkay Gundogan despite the controversy he was involved in over the summer.

Gundogan, along with Arsenal star Mesut Ozil and Everton striker Cenk Tosun met Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in London in May.

The incident sparked uproar in Germany. Ozil and Gundogan was subjected to harsh criticism and the Arsenal man actually quit the national team in protest of how he was treated, citing racism and discrimination among the factors behind his move.

Gundogan decided not to retire and has been brought back into the fold by Low.

The midfielder of Turkish origin has been in good form for City in the Premier League this season starting every game for the reigning champions except the 2-1 victory over Newcastle United.
