Turkish sports newspaper Fanatik claimed that the Red Devils would be willing to sell Mata to Besiktas if they sign Talisca for €25 million [£21 million] over the summer

United have been closely linked with Talisca who has a release clause worth £21 million but the Mata link to Besiktas is a new story to emerge.

Besiktas have however, been quick to dismiss the transfer rumours.

The Black Eagles released an official statement denying that an offer has been made for Mata and put down the rumour as an attempt to undermine the team before an important European game.

The statement read: “The transfer rumour claiming that Besiktas will be signing Manchester United’s Spanish international player Juan Mata is false. Considering we have an important Super Lig and Europa League game coming up it serves as nothing more than a distraction and we urge the press to be more responsible.”

Mata is out injured until the end of the season with a groin injury.

The Spanish international will have just 12 months on his contract remaining at the end of the season.

Besiktas play Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final second-leg tie on Thursday in Istanbul.

The Eagles lost the first-leg 2-1 in France last week.

The Istanbul giants could end up playing United in the Europa if they find a way past Lyon and is United knockout Anderlecht in their quarter-final tie.
