Man United warned over signing Arsenal star Mesut Ozil by Mark Lawrenson

Manchester United have been closely linked with a move for Arsenal star Mesut Ozil as the star playmakers contract continues to run down.

Ozil has under 12 months remaining on his contract but has yet to sign an extension.

The playmaker of Turkish origin could end up leaving North London as a free transfer unless a resolution is reached.

Football pundit Mark Lawrenson has however, issued United with a warning regarding efforts to sign Ozil.

Lawrenson does not believe Ozil is the kind of player for a Jose Mourinho side.

Speaking for BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: ‘I don’t think Mourinho would take him. ‘I’m pretty certain he wouldn’t take Ozil. He wouldn’t fit into the Mourinho blueprint of a player.’

The statement that does sound a little strange considering Ozil has already thrived under Mourinho in the past, during their time at Real Madrid.

In fact it was one of Ozil’s most successful periods.

The playmaker scored 27 times and provided 81 assists in 159 games for Real.

Perhaps Lawrenson doesn’t watch much La Liga? or maybe he feels Mourinho’s style has changed since then.

Ozil missed the Gunners 1-0 victory over Burnley at the weekend due to illness.

The 2014 World Cup winner has one goal and three assists in 10 games for the Gunners this season.
