Ilkay Gundogan has stated that he still wants a new challenge despite signing a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund only last month.

The Germany international was closely linked with a move to Manchester United and Arsenal but opted to extend his deal with Dortmund after failing to agree personal terms with the Premier League duo.

Both United and Arsenal may still have a chance of signing the 24-year-old after he told Kicker that he still desires a new challenge.

“Everyone has to form his own opinion – I just want to be honest.” Gündoğan told Kicker.

“I appreciate this wonderful club very much, but my life plan also looks at some time with a new challenge.”

The 24-year-old previously turned down a contract offer from Dortmund but changed his mind regarding his future following discussions with their newly appointed manager Thomas Tuchel.

The Dortmund midfielder was closely linked with a move away from the Bundesliga giants following the end of the 2014-15 season but is now expected to stay until at least the next transfer window.

Gündoğan wrapped up the season with five assists and three goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.
