The first time Wayne Rooney played against Fenerbahce it was also at Old Trafford back in 2004 and it was his debut. The Red Devils captain scored a hat-trick last time around in the 6-2 victory.
Rooney started against the Yellow Canaries yesterday and United once again won by an empatic scoreline. The Red Devils beat Fenerbahce 4-1 but the England international was not on the scoresheet this around.
United have now scored 10 times in their last two home games against Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce did however, become the first team to beat the Red Devils at home in a UEFA competition game back in 1996.
The victory moved United into first place in Group A on six points. Fenerbahce dropped into third place following Feyenoord beating Zorya 1-0.
United and Feyenoord are currently tied on six points while Fenerbahce are third with four points and Zorya are last on one point.
The other Super Lig representatives in the Europa League fared better on the night. Osmanlispor held Villarreal to a 2-2 draw and Konyaspor drew 1-1 against Konyaspor.
In the Champions League Besiktas recorded a 3-2 win over Napoli. The victory was their first against Italian opposition in Europe and Napoli’s first home defeat in the Champions League.
