Manchester City is reportedly determined to retain star goalkeeper Ederson despite strong interest from Turkish champions Galatasaray. While Galatasaray is said to have agreed to personal terms with the 31-year-old Brazilian, City is keen to ensure he remains at the Etihad Stadium, even with just one year left on his current contract as reported by Independent.
Galatasaray has been confident in their pursuit of Ederson, aiming to secure his services as a high-profile addition. However, City appears prepared to risk losing him on a free transfer next summer rather than sanctioning a move now.
City’s Goalkeeper Contingency Plan
Should Ederson ultimately depart, Manchester City reportedly has a contingency plan in place. The club could turn to England Under-21 international James Trafford, whom they sold to Burnley two years ago. City retained a buyback clause for Trafford, who has also attracted attention from Newcastle United following Burnley’s promotion.
Last month, Ederson himself dismissed rumors of his departure as “fake news.” However, subsequent reports of Galatasaray’s strong interest, coupled with a significant offer from the Saudi Pro League last summer, suggest that a move away from Manchester City has been a recurring possibility.
A Decorated Career and Potential Replacements
Ederson has been a pivotal figure for Manchester City, making 372 appearances over eight years and becoming the most decorated goalkeeper in the club’s history. His potential exit would create a significant void for manager Pep Guardiola.
While City has already signed goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli this summer, losing Ederson would necessitate a fourth major signing for Guardiola, following the arrivals of Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, and Rayan Ait-Nouri. The club’s firm stance on Ederson indicates their valuation of his role within the squad, even as his contract winds down. The coming weeks will reveal whether Galatasaray’s persistence can sway City’s resolve.
