“Maybe there is still a chance that he has a rethink,” Dortmund’s general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke told WAZ.
“We are in talks and Ilkay is a decent lad. A contract extension with him was from the outset our preferred solution.”
Gündoğan has been closely linked with Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich over the past month but has failed to agree personal terms.
The Germany international will make a decision regarding his future “as soon as possible,” according to a statement the Dortmund midfielder published on his official Facebook page.
Gündoğan played a staring role in Germany’s 7-0 victory over Gibraltar on last week.
The Borussia Dortmund star finished the season with five assists and three goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.
