Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan set to continue playing for Germany national team

Arsenal star playmaker Mesut Ozil and Man City’s Ilkay Gundogan’s futures as Germany national team players has been called into question following their disastrous campaign in Russia.

Both Ozil and Gundogan were heavily criticised in the lead up to the competition after posing for a photograph with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ozil bore the brunt of the majority of the criticism directed at Germany following their defeats to both Mexico and South Korea.

However, the German outlet Kicker states that the duo will continue to play for the Germany national team despite a turbulent summer.

Gundogan only made one appearance during the competition for Germany during their 2-1 win over Sweden. Ozil meanwhile created a total of seven goa-scoring chances for his teammates during their 2-0 defeat to Korea.

The 29-year-old is expected to return to Arsenal in the coming days to begin preparations for the 2018/19 season. Ozil was handed the No.10 jersey following Jack Wilshere’s departure from the club.
