Manchester United ace Alexis Sanchez is missing his old teammate Mesut Ozil, according to former Arsenal star Paul Merson.

Sanchez made the switch from Arsenal to the Red Devils back in January in a deal which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move in the opposite direction.

The Chile international was a key member of Arsenal’s starting eleven however, he has gotten off to a slow start with Man United.

Sanchez has registered just six assists and three goals in 21 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Merson believes Ozil was responsible for Sanchez’s impressive performances during his time with Arsenal. The former England international also defended Ozil from critics.

“He [Ozil] isn’t going to run around like Sanchez did for Arsenal when he gives the ball away and chases 50 yards back,” Merson told TalkSPORT.

“In a way he made Sanchez a better player. The fans loved Sanchez because he would lose the ball but run 30 yards back and tackle. The fans were saying why doesn’t Ozil do that?

“But Ozil doesn’t do that because he doesn’t give the ball away as many times.”
