Fellow Arsenal teammate Lukas Podolski scored Germany’s second goal to make it 2-2 on 81 minutes.

Germany international of Turkish origin Ilkay Gündoğan also started against Australia.

Georgia will take on Germany next on Sunday in their Euro 2016 qualifying game.

Özil became the first player of Turkish origin to lift a World Cup in Brazil last summer.

The 26-year-old also won the FA Cup in his first season at Arsenal and has a chance to defend the cup this year with a semi-final match up against Reading at Wembley.

The Arsenal attacking midfielder has come under criticism for his work rate this season but Özil has covered more distance than his teammates since returning from injury.

The Gunners will face Liverpool in the Premier League after the international break.
