New ‘ABBA’ penalty shoot-out system will be used for Arsenal v Chelsea clash
Football fans could whiteness a new penalty format during the Community Shield this weekend.
The FA have confirmed that the ‘ABBA’ system will be used at Wembley. The aim is to eliminate the advantage the first kick-taker gets.
Arsenal and Chelsea face up against each other on Sunday. If the game goes to penalties the new shoot-out format will be used. The ABBA system is based on the tennis tie-break format.
The current AB AB system is thought to provid the team which takes the first penalty with an advantage. However, the ABBA system means that one team takes a penalty, followed by the opposition taking two penalties.
Each team then alternates in taking two penalties until a result is reached.
For example, if Chelsea takes the first spot-kick, then Arsenal will take two penalties before Chelsea take another penalty.

The FA released a statement regarding the new penalty system.
“The FA has today announced that a different order of kicks for Kicks from the Penalty Mark (KFPM) will be trialled at Sunday’s FA Community Shield supported by McDonald’s – the first time the new format will be used competitively in the country.
“The new format will be used across all English Football League tournaments from this season but the first chance to see the system at work could now come this weekend at Wembley.”
