Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure at Besiktas has come to an abrupt end. The Turkish club announced today that the former Manchester United manager has been sacked following their elimination from the UEFA Conference League play-offs.

The 52-year-old Norwegian, who took charge in January, was dismissed after a 1-0 defeat to Swiss side Lausanne on Thursday night, which meant Besiktas will not play in European competition this season.

“Our contract with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a decision made at a board meeting,” the club said in an official statement. “Our chairman, Serdal Adalı, thanked Solskjaer for his services to date.”

Despite steering the team to a fourth-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig last season, his time in charge was marked by a series of European setbacks.

Besiktas had previously been knocked out of the Europa League qualifiers by Shakhtar Donetsk before dropping into the Conference League, where their run also ended prematurely.

The club is now searching for a replacement, and former Borussia Dortmund player and manager Nuri Sahin has been linked with the vacant role.
