England women’s manager Phil Neville made a bizarre claim during Germany’s opening World Cup 2018 clash against Mexico on Sunday.
Germany got their defence of the World Cup trophy off to an awful start after losing 1-0 to Mexico.
Arsenal star Mesut Ozil started the game after recovering from a knee injury that ruled him out of the warm-up game against Saudi Arabia.
Neville said that Ozil enjoys playing for Germany more than he does for Arsenal.
“I’m actually a massive fan of him,” Neville said on BBC One.
“He’s just got so much quality on the ball.
“I think he enjoys playing for Germany more than he does for Arsenal,” he said.
“He’s in a better team around better players.”
I do not quite understand what point Neville was trying to make, how he would know who Ozil prefers playing for and why it was relevant.
Neville did go onto say that he is the key man at Germany and that at Arsenal he is sometimes played out of position.
“He is their key man, he plays in that central position,” he added.
“Sometimes at Arsenal they shove him on the left or the right, but for Germany he’s the focal point.
“He’s the one that they look to thread the passes to (Thomas) Muller, to (Timo) Werner.”
To be fair Ozil is the main man at Arsenal as well and the highest paid player in the squad.
Perhaps the playmaker of Turkish origin enjoys playing for both sides or does not have a favorite.
Anyway Germany will take on Sweden next in Group F.
The other group game will take place tomorrow between South Korea and Sweden.
