The decision was a little peculiar considering Ryan Babel scored twice for Besiktas and Anderson Talisca provided two assists.
Quaresma did provide an assist but ran out of steam in the second half and was brought off for Cenk Tosun who scored the final goal in the 4-1 victory over Olympiakos.
Besiktas booked a place in the quarter-finals after recording a 5-2 win on aggregate.
Mata meanwhile scored the winning goal that took United through to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Krasnador.
The Spanish midfielder came third in the UEFA poll, picking up 14 percent of the vote. Ajax star Dolberg came second and Rossi fourth.
Besiktas will take on Lyon in the quarter-finals while United have drawn Belgium giants Anderlecht. Ajax will face Schalke but Rossi’s Roma were knocked out of the competition by Lyon.
