Rangers officials set for talks in Istanbul over €5m international star who previously played alongside Steven Gerrard

Rangers have stepped up their interest in Fenerbahce star defender Martin Skrtel.

The Slovakia international has been closely linked with a move to the Scottish Premier League giants in recent weeks. According to the Turkish outlet Takvim, Fenerbahce have already turned down a €4 million offer from Rangers for Skrtel.

Per the source, Fenerbahce are holding out for an offer in the region of €5 million. Takvim go onto state that Rangers officials will travel to Istanbul to hold advanced talks with Fenerbahce and Skrtel.

Fenerbahce may be forced into selling Skrtel this summer as he has just 12 months remaining on his contract. The Slovakia international was, of course, a teammate of Gerrard during his time at Liverpool.

Skrtel made 320 appearances for Liverpool over a period of eight years, scoring 18 times and providing six assists in the process. The experienced defender went onto join Fenerbahce back in 2016.
