Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes that Emre Can has agreed to join Juventus on a free transfer.

Can has been linked with a move to the Italian giants for several months as his contract standoff with Liverpool continues to drag on.

The midfielder of Turkish origin is out of contract in the summer but has yet to agree to an extension.

The 24-year-old did recently reveal that he has not actually agreed a deal with Juve – or any club – but Thompson thinks otherwise.

He told Sky Sports: “The Emre Can situation is a blot on the copybook as I think he has already agreed a move to Juventus. “Players are running the contracts down to get the big payday, like Sanchez did, and if it drags on beyond January then he is definitely not going to sign a new deal at Liverpool.”Can meanwhile underlined that he could actually stay on at Liverpool beyond the end of the season despite reports that he is set for a move to Italy. What is certain is that Can will not be leaving the Reds over the winter transfer window. The Germany international has pledged allegiance to Liverpool until the end of the season.

He told Sky Sports News: “I still have a contract here until the end of the season.

“I give everything for the club, I will try to give everything for the club.

“The rest is down to my agent, and I’m just responsible for performances on the pitch.

“Of course, if I have a contract I will always give my best, or I will try to give my best.”

Juventus chief Giuseppe Marotta also said there is no certainty that Can will join.

Marotta told Italian outlet Premium Sport: “The interest is clear.

“We want to try and bring him to us, but we cannot do it because he currently has a contract with Liverpool.

“He could renew it and, moreover, there are other teams interested in him.”

Liverpool have already struck a deal to land Naby Keita from Red Bull Leipzig this summer but are keen on keeping Can on their books as well.

The Reds take on West Brom next in the FA Cup 4th Round on Saturday 27 January, Can is likely to start.
