Arsenal have failed behind Besiktas in the UEFA club rankings for the 2016-17 season.

UEFA updated their club ranking system today on the official organisation website.

Besiktas overtook the Gunners, moving into 13th place this season following their Europa League quarter-final exit against Lyon.

The Black Eagles lost the first-leg 2-1 in France but forced the tie into extra-time in the second leg after making the scores 3-3 on aggregate in Istanbul.

The Istanbul giants eventually lost the tie on penalties but managed to gain enough coefficient points to overtake the North London based outfit.

Arsenal exited the Champions League at the Last 16 stage for a seventh consecutive season after losing the tie against Bayern Munich 10-2 on aggregate.

In the overall ranking which is based on performance in European competition across the past five years Besiktas are in 43rd place.

The Eagles are however, very likely to book a place in the Champions League for the second season running.

Real Madrid are currently first in the rankings with rivals Atletico Madrid narrowly behind them in second place.

Fellow Champions League semi-finalists Juventus and Monaco are third and fourth, respectively.
