Revealed: Birmingham City boss Zola discloses plans for Kerim Frei

Revealed: Birmingham City boss Gianfranco Zola reveals plans for Kerim Frei

Turkish international midfielder Kerim Frei has struggled for playing time since joining Birmingham City in January.

Blues boss Gianfranco Zola has however, revealed that Frei will get his chance and that he has full faith in his quality.

Zola underlined that he does have plans for Frei and that the winger will be introduced when he wants Birmingham to start playing more offensive football.

“At the moment, the main focus is to defend well because the whole team feels more comfortable with that mind,” Zola was quoted as saying on the official club website.
“I tell them [Adams and Frei] (pictured) every training session that their time will come. I know they are quality players.
“For the way they train they deserve to play, but they know that at the moment that what is required is something different.
“It is not what they want, but to be fair they are continuing to work very hard.
“As soon as we get the points we need I will be able to make the team more offensive.
“Sometimes we could try to do more going forwards by playing one more offensive player.
“But considering the circumstances and the pressure we were under some time ago it easier for the team to be strong and compact and hard to beat than to be creative and offensively.
“When they are given the opportunity, I am sure they will give it back. Their commitment is very high.”

Frei played an important role in Besiktas winning the Turkish league title last season and booking a place in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old did however, struggle to look down a regular role as a first-choice starter with the likes of Ricardo Quaresma ahead of him in the pecking order.

Frei decided to return to England in January in pursuit of first team football but has played just 371 minutes of Championship football.

Birmingham City are currently 18th in the league, just six points above the relegation zone.
