Revealed: Liverpool star will not be Germany captain, Arsenal defender Mustafi likely to lead national team

Germany national team manager Joachim Low has revealed who will captain his side against San Marino at home in the World Cup qualification Group C.

Low has left out several important first-team players including Arsenal player maker of Turkish origin Mesut Ozil.

Fellow midfielder of Turkish origin Emre Can has however, been included and was tipped to be in with a running for the captains armband.

Low has however, revealed that Julian Draxler is his first choice captain if fit tonight.

Alternatively Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi will be named captain.

Low did not reveal plans to name Can for the captains armband.

“Julian Draxler completed a small training session without any problems and he is expected to train with the rest of the team later today [Friday]. If he is also able to do that without any problems, then he will also be in the starting XI and the captain,” Low was quoted as saying in his pre-match press conference.

“If some problems do arise, though, then we will not be taking any risks. Shkodran Mustafi is available. We left him out on Tuesday [against Denmark] as a precaution following his concussion. If Draxler does not play, he will be the captain.”

Germany are already close to ensuring qualification to the World Cup.

Can has been in impressive form for Liverpool over the 2016-17 season and played a key role in his side finishing in the top four and booking a place in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old is expected to start in midfield against San Marino tonight.
