Unal enjoyed a successful stint on loan at FC Twente this season netting 19 goals and providing four assists in all competitions.

The powerful striker became the highest scoring Turkish international in the Eredivisie after finding the back of the net 18 times in the league.

Unal would however, be to play in the Premier League next season under the current Home Office rulings despite his impressive form as he is a non-EU player.

Permit system for non-EU players

According to the FA: Required % of international matches over previous 24 months is determined by the player’s National Association’s official FIFA ranking:

FIFA 1-10: 30% and above
FIFA 11-20: 45% and above
FIFA 21-30: 60% and above
FIFA 31-50: 75% and above

Reference period reduced to 12 months for those players aged 21 or under at time of application

There have been successful appeals which have resulted in work permits being granted to non EU players who have not reached the national team quota of games required.

Arsenal defender Gabriel is a recent example and was granted a permit under the ‘exceptional talent‘ guidelines.
