Süper Lig Week 7 was the highest scoring yet with a total of 37 goals being recorded in the nine games played over the weekend.
Fenerbahçe will be most delighted with the manner in which the week unfolded. The Yellow Canaries beat Gençlerbirliği 2-1 to maintain a win streak against the Ankara based side which extends back to 2004.
Emre Belözoğlu put the home side ahead on 50 minutes from the penalty spot. Antal equalised for Gençlerbirliği on 80 minutes but Fenerbahçe hero Dirk Kuyt came to the rescue to reestablish the Canaries lead and take them into second place on 13 points.
Galatasaray had the chance to make up for a humiliating 4-0 loss against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and build upon last weeks 2-1 win against rivals Fenerbahçe in the derby.
The Lions were however, the victims of the weeks biggest upset, losing 4-0 to Başakşehir. Cesare Prandelli picked a brand new defensive lineup including Koray Günter and Hakan Balta at centre-back with Tarık Çamdal and Veysel Sarı as fullbacks.
The defensive experiment backfired and the Lions frailty at the back was exposed by clinical counter-attacking moves from the home side.
Marcio Mossoro scored the first goal for Başakşehir on 16 mins, followed by Semih Şentürk four minutes later. Mossoro scored his brace after half-time and Doka wrapped up the fourt goal on 76 mins.
Despite the loss Galatasaray remained in joint second place along with Fenerbahçe. Başakşehir moved up into seventh spot and maintained their unbeaten record in the process.
Akhisar also had the chance to move into first place but were unable to find a way past Karabükspor.
Theofanis Gekas gave Akhisar the lead on 50 minutes with his seventh goal of the season but Ahmet Çebe put the Akigos on the back foot when he was sent off just two minutes later.
The Steelers managed to come back from behind with goals from Traore and Bahadır to win the game 2-1 and move into 13th place.
Mersin rejoined the leading pack on with a 4-2 win against Eskişehirspor. EsEs actually took a two-goal lead but somehow managed to concede four goals against a Mersin side who played much of the game with 10 men following Murat Ceylan’s sending off.
The win took Mersin into joint second along with Galatasaray, Akhisar and Fenerbahçe. Meanwhile EsEs dropped into 16th place.
Beşiktaş missed out on a great opportunity to open up a four point gap at the top of the table following a 3-2 loss against Erciyesspor.
Boye gave the Kayseri based the lead just after half time and were in pole position when Gökhan Töre was sent off on 67 minutes. However, Kerim Frei scored on 70 and 85 mins to give Beşiktaş what looked like a hard won victory.
There was yet more drama as Erciyesspor managed to score twice in the last minutes of the game with goals from Edinho and Alkilic to record their first win of the season.
The most exciting game of the week award however, probably goes to Trabzonspor who drew 4-4 with Gaziantepspor. The Falcons took a two-goal lead going into the half time break with goals from Muhammet Demir and Erdem Şen.
Belkalem pulled one back for the home side just three minutes into the second half but Demir scored his brace on 52 mins to restore the visitors two goal cushion.
Yatabare made the score 4-2 on 63 minutes but Sefa Yılmaz replied just four minutes later to make it 4-3 and give Trabzonspor a glimmer of hope.
Gaziantepspor were on the verge of winning only their second away game against Trabzonspor in 36 attempts but were denied by a last minute header from Oscar Cardozo. The Paraguayan striker has now scored three Süper Lig goals this season.
At the foot of the table, last placed Balıkesirspor were crushed 5-0 by Bursaspor at the Atatürk stadium. Summer signing Cedric Bakambu was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick within 35 minutes. The 23-year-old striker has now scored five goals in his last two games.
Kasımpaşa returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win against Konyaspor which saw the visitors hurtle down the league standings into 15th place. Meanwhile Sivasspor’s dismal run continued with a 1-0 loss against Rizespor which saw Roberto Carlos’ side drop into 17th place.
