Terry McDermott Thinks Liverpool Star Will Leave But ‘Can’t Understand’ Why

Liverpool legend Terry McDermott has given his take on the Emre Can contract saga.

Unless you have been living in a cave, cut off by internet for the past season you will probably know Can has just a few months left on his contract.

The midfielder of Turkish origin has just a few months remaining on his contract.

Can has yet to sign an extension but has not ruled out the possibility of staying either.

McDermott revealed he just cannot understand why Can would not want to stay. After all Jurgen Klopp has continued to play him despite uncertainty over his future.

It is obvious Klopp is keen on Can, would he be afforded the same opportunities at say Juventus? there are no guarantees he will walk into the starting XI at other clubs or settle in.

“That’s a strange one for me,” McDermott told the Liverpool Echo.

“I can’t understand why he would want to leave Liverpool. I know that foreign players don’t have the same affinity with the club as local lads like Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Phil Thompson or myself. We were heartbroken when the day came that we had to move on.

“But Can is playing every week for a manager who trusts him, he’s earning a lot of money and he’s part of an exciting team.

“Maybe he thinks he can get more money elsewhere but walking away would be a gamble because Liverpool are getting better and better under Klopp.”

Can faces a huge decision at the end of the season over whether to renew his deal and stay on at Liverpool or take a gamble and move elsewhere.
