The man behind Basaksehir’s rise to the top of the Turkish Super League

Turkish Super League leaders Medipol Basaksehir may be an unknown quantity to many football fans – which is unsurprising seeing that the club was only formed in June 2014.

The man behind the miracle so far is 53 year-old Abdullah Avci. The experinced manager promoted Basaksehir to the Turkish Super League in his first season in charge and established them as mid-table side before taking the reigns of the Turkish national team.

The move perhaps came too early for Avci, who struggled to match the lofty expectations placed on Turkish national side. Unfortunately, Basaksehir also struggled in the 53-year-old’s absence and came close to relegation before Avci returned to save the club.

Avci went onto make a string of astute signings such as Alexandru Epureanu – who is one of the leading defenders in the league – on a free transfer.

Basaksehir currently sit in first place in Turkey’s top flight with 36 points after 16 games and are a point ahead of Istanbul rivals Besiktas.
