Turkish Cup quarter-final draw: Could Basaksehir win the double?

The Turkish Cup draw saw surprise Super Lig challengers Basaksehir draw Akhisar while Istanbul giants Fenerbahce will face Kayserispor.

In the other two quarter-final ties, the only second-tier side left Sivasspor all face Konyaspor while Istanbul minnows Kasimpasa drew Rizespor.

Basaksehir progressed to the quarter-finals after knocking Galatasaray out of the cup. A few years ago the result would have been a huge upset but it is time we start facing the facts. Basaksehir are not to be taken lightly anymore. The club may have only been founded in 1990 but they no longer deserve to be called minnows. Abdullah Avci’s boys have finished the Turkish league in the top-four for the past two seasons.

The other major quarter-final clash saw Fenerbahce eliminate Besiktas from the cup in a heated game at the Vodafone Arena.

Van Persie ended up having quite a game and not all for the right reasons. The Dutch star reacted rather theatrically when confronted by Dusko Tosic. Van Persie’s amateur dramatics were so convincing that the referee ended up sending the Besiktas defender off.

The replays showed Van Persie appearing to knee Tosic just before the incident but to be fair the Serbian international gave the referee no option but to send him off with how he responded.

Van Persie then had a bust up with Oguzhan Ozyakup before scoring the winning goal and celebrating by sliding past his former Arsenal teammate while goading him.

The Dutch striker was not finished there. He also wagged his tongue at the Besiktas crowd and hurled profanities at them almost sparking a riot.
