Turkish League Wrap 28 – Title Race Drama As Besiktas Beat Leaders Basaksehir

The Turkish Super Lig title race was blown wide open after Besiktas beat Basaksehir 2-1 at the Vodafone Park Stadium over the weekend.

Week 28 was derby week in the Turkish league. 2nd placed Galatasaray faced Fenerbahce in the Intercontinental Derby while 3rd Besiktas hosted league leaders Basaksehir.

Besiktas were up first on Saturday and did not actually get off to the best start.

It was Basaksehir who took the lead after Edin Visca setup Robinho with the opening goal on 35 minutes.

Visca has been in superb form this season and has now setup 13 goals in the league.

Besiktas managed to launch a comeback after Atiba Hutchinson equalised just before the half-time break.

Burak Yilmaz wrapped up all three points in the second half with a brilliant finish for his eighth goal in eight games since joining Besiktas in January.

Besiktas have now won their last four successive league games and end the week having closed the gap with Basaksehir to eight points.

With the Black Eagles winning Galatasaray were given the chance to close the gap with Basaksehir to three points.

The only obstacle was Fenerbahce. A team the Lions have not defeated away this century.

The Yellow Canaries meanwhile are in the midst of their worst campaign in recent memory and headed into the game just five points above the relegation zone.

The Lions looked finally to have broken the curse after Fenerbahce were reduced to 10 men following Hasan Ali Kaldirim being sent off after VAR intervention.

Henry Onyekuru then went onto score what looked to be the winner early in the second-half.

Henry Onyekuru scores his 12th goal of the season against @Fenerbahce as @Galatasaray drew 1-1 away in their league fixture.

But old habits die hard and 10 man Fenerbahce managed to get back into the game after Elif Elmas equalised.

The point closed the gap between Galatasaray and Basaksehir to five points. Fenerbahce meanwhile are started to move clear of relegation trouble.

Elsewhere, Trabzonspor extended their winning streak to four games after 19-year-old sensation Abdulkadir Omur’s winner in the 1-0 victory away to Bursaspor.

The 4th-placed side are now just four points behind Besiktas.

The top four has taken shape. It seems inconceivable that 5th placed Malatyaspor will be able to make up an 11 point gap before the end of the campaign.

At the bottom of the table 16th placed Goztepe are in real trouble after losing their last three games.

Erzurumspor showed a glimmer of hope after beating last-placed Akhisar 2-1.

Fortunately for the bottom three, 15th placed Bursaspor are performing equally bad and are just one point above Goztepe.
