Turks Abroad: Atleti lift La Liga, Arsenal win FA Cup, HSV survive

Atletico Madrid star Arda Turan became the first player born in Turkey to win the La Liga as the Colchoneros won their first league title since 1996.

Atletico lost their top scorer, Diego Costa and then Arda Turán in the first half due to injury against Barcelona on the weekend however, managed to see off their rivals and draw the game 1-1.

Speaking to LigTV after the game Arda Turan stated: “I’d like to thank everybody in Turkey who prayed for me. I was devastated when I suffered an injury and had to come off but I’m hopeful that I will be fit for the Champions League final”.

Atleti have the chance to win the double as they play Real Madrid on Saturday 25 May 2014 in the Champions League final.

Mesut Özil helped Arsenal break a nine year trophy drought as the Gunners came from two goals down against Hull to win 3-2 in Saturday’s FA Cup Final match.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Tolgay Arslan were both in the starting lineup as HSV Hamburg drew 1-1 with Furth in the second leg of their relegation playoff at the Trolli Arena.

The draw ensured HSV kept their status as the only club to never be relegated from the Bundesliga in it’s 51-year history.

Çalhanoğlu wrapped up a successful season with 11 goals and four assists.

Elsewhere Mevlüt Erdinç scored for St Etienne in their 3-1 win over Ajaccio. The Turkish international finished the season with 11 goals and two assists in 19 starts for the Ligue 1 outfit.
