Turks Abroad: Cengiz Under Makes History Against Liverpool, Cenk Tosun Shoots Blanks For Everton

Cengiz Under

The 20-year-old started his first match in four games against Genoa and ended up scoring the opener in the 2-1 victory on Wednesday. Under was rested against SPAL on Saturday ahead of the Champions League semi-final first-leg tie at Anfield. The Giallorossi wonderkid became the youngest Turkey international and the first Altinordu developed player to start a last-four clash in the tournament. Unfortunately, Roma were uncharacteristically poor in the first half. Under struggled to make his mark playing out of position as a forward. The youngster was starved of service in what was a dreadful opening 45 minutes for the visitors. Eusebio Di Francesco switched things around at half-time taking Under off for Schick. It did little to stop the onslaught as Liverpool scored five times before taking their foot off the gas and naively allowing Roma to score twice in quick succession in the last five minutes.

Cenk Tosun – Everton

Tosun has not scored in his last four games for Everton. To be fair he is really trying hard. The problem is the lack of service. The Turkey international took just one shot. He did manage to create a goal scoring chance and was involved in the build-up to Theo Walcott’s goal. Knowing the 26-year-old, he will not complain or give up. Expect him to give it his all again next week as well. If Sam Allardyce decides to take the stabilizers off and employ a more attack focused approach Tosun may be able to shine again.

Ilkay Gundogan

Gundogan had a ridiculous 159 touches on the ball, made an astounding 145 passes at an incredible 95 percent accuracy. I’ve run out of superlatives to describe the midfielder of Turkish origin’s display in the 5-0 win over Swansea.

Omer Toprak

Omer Toprak helped man the ‘yellow wall’ against his former side Bayer Leverkusen. The experienced defender did not put a foot wrong in the 4-0 victory.

Berkay Ozcan

He has finally done it! Berkay scored his first goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Werder Bremen. The 20-year-old has managed to break into the first-team but is not yet a starter. Perhaps Tayfun will have a change of heart in the final few weeks after an impressive half-an-hour.

Caglar Soyuncu

Soyuncu saw red for the second time this season but it was really harsh. Freiburg ended up losing 1-0 to Hamburg and falling into the relegation zone. The Bundesliga outfit have lost their last four games but things are so tight at the bottom that a win could propel them to 14. Still everything to play for!
