Turks Abroad: Everton Find Their Away Elixir In Cenk, Enes Unal Rocks Atletico Madrid

Cenk Tosun – Everton

Everton found their away elixir in Cenk Tosun against Stoke City at the Bet 365 Stadium on Saturday. The January signing scored his first brace for the club in the 2-1 win over the Potters – their first away victory of 2018. The Turkey international is starting to demonstrate why the Toffees paid £27 million for him. That’s four goals in his last three games now. Tosun has shown how versatile he is as a forward, scoring two headers, a tap-in and a brilliant technical finish in the 2-0 win over Brighton the week before.

The 26-year-old actually scored his two goals against Stoke with just three shots on target while his dad watched from the away end with the fans. He even called his teammates ‘the lads’ after the game and his name was chanted by the traveling support. To-rrific stuff – excuse the pun.

The best part for Everton fans reading this is that Tosun still has a lot more to give. You have only seen a glimpse of what he is capable of. As he settles more and builds synergy with his new teammates his intelligence, vision and creativity will become more apparent. Tosun is more than a traditional center-forward, his link-up play, movement in counter-attacking moves and assist providing ability were excellent at Besiktas. Expect to be surprised over the next few weeks.

Hakan Calhanoglu – AC Milan

After scoring a cracking goal in the Europa League against AC Milan, Calhanoglu was at it again. Netting the opener in the 3-2 win over Chievo. The 24-year-old now has five goals and six assists in all competitions for the Rossoneri.

Enes Unal – Villarreal

Unal has been plucking away for weeks but needed his big break and boy did he get it. The former Manchester City starlet was brought on in the 74th minute with Villarreal trailing against Atletico Madrid. The 20-year-old went onto equalise and then score a last-gasp winner to become a Yellow Submarine hero. The Turkey international managed to pick up a man of the match award despite being on the pitch for just 15 minutes. All in a days work!

Tayfun Korkut – Stuttgart

We do not include many managers in our Turks Abroad round-up. The fact of the matter is there are very few Turkish coaches plying their trade outside Turkey. Tayfun Korkut could be about to change that after turning around the fortunes of Stuttgart.

Stuttgart were in the relegation zone when Korkut took charge. The Bundesliga outfit have gone seven matches without defeat, moving into 8th position, averaging 2.42 points per-game. He could end up guiding the team into Europe at this rate!
