Turks Abroad: Cengiz Under Returns In Style, Ilkay Gundogan Makes History, Hakan Calhanoglu Scores

Cengiz Under – Roma

Under only played 10 minutes but that was enough time to provide an assist in the 2-0 victory over Juventus. The Turkey international missed most of the second half of the season with injury but he has made a full recovery. Welcome back Cengo!

Hakan Calhanoglu – AC Milan

Calhanoglu put on a man of the match display for AC Milan in their 1-0 victory over Fiorentina. The talismanic playmaker has been in impressive form for the Italian giants who kept their hopes of Champions League football alive.

Ilkay Gundogan – Manchester City

Gundogan became the first player of Turkish origin to win two Premier League titles – he’s actually the only Turk to have won the championship – over the weekend after City pummelled Brighton 4-1. The 28-year-old was one of the stars of the show scoring a wonderful free-kick and putting on a stellar display.

Mehmet Zeki Celik – Lille

Lille secured a Champions League spot following their 1-0 win over Bordeaux. The Ligue 1 outfit secured a runners-up spot in the process. Mehmet Zeki Celik started. It is astounding just how far he has come this term. Last season he was playing second-tier football in Turkey. He has now established himself as a first-team star for the second best side in France. Kudos Celik.

Enes Unal – Valladolid

Unal elevated himself to hero status over the weekend. The 21-year-old scored and provided an assist in the 2-1 win away to Rayo Vallecano. The victory kept his side in the league. The star striker now has three goals and two assists in his last six games.

Cenk Tosun – Everton

Cenk finally got his name on the scoresheet and you could see how much it meant to him. The Toffees striker has only scored three times this season and it is difficult seeing his situation as second – if not third – choice option upfront changing over the summer.

Ozan Kabak – Stuttgart

The 18-year-old put on a wonderful display in Stuttgart’s 3-0 victory over Wolfsburg. The Bundesliga outfit have not been in the best of form and are still in the relegation zone but Kabak has shown he is more than capable at this level.
