UEFA Announce A Return To Istanbul A Day Before Liverpool 2005 Champions League Final Anniversary

UEFA have announced that the 2020 UEFA Champions League final will take place at the Istanbul Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadium.

The decision was taken at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Kyiv on Thursday.

The Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadium is the largest stadium in Turkey with a maximum capacity of 80,0000.

The stadium is set for renovation and could look something like this by the time of the final.

The announcement came just a day before the anniversary of the 2005 UEFA Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan.

In one of the most memorable final games Liverpool came from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties.

The event is remembered as the ‘Miracle of Istanbul’ among Reds fans.

The stadium is named after Musfafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Turkey and has been used for several sporting events including the major athletics events.

The stadium was home to Istanbul giants Galatasaray (2003/04), İstanbul Başakşehir (2007–14) and Beşiktaş (2013–16).

The Turkey Euro 2024 bid has included the footballing arena along with the Turk Telekom Arena to represent Istanbul.
