Vincenzo Montella Defiant Ahead of Italy Encounter: ‘I Want to Continue as Türkiye Coach’

Türkiye head coach Vincenzo Montella has insisted he has no intention of stepping down from his post regardless of the outcome in Monday’s UEFA Nations League A1 clash against Italy at the Stadio Dall’Ara.

The 52-year-old Italian strategist finds himself under intense pressure following an early 2026 World Cup exit and a difficult start to their top-tier Nations League campaign, where the Crescent-Stars remain without a point after three consecutive defeats to France, Italy, and Belgium.

Addressing Pressure and Inflated Expectations

Speaking to reporters in Bologna ahead of kickoff against the Azzurri, Montella pushed back against dismissal speculation and reflected on the national team’s trajectory over his tenure.

“I want to continue as Türkiye coach,” Montella stated firmly. “We inflated the expectations over three years with good results—qualifying for the Euros, topping our group, returning to the World Cup after 24 years, and reaching League A of the Nations League for the first time.

“When you compete at this elite level against the top teams in Europe, setbacks are part of the learning process.”

Special Touchline Meeting with Mancini

The fixture marks an emotional personal return to Italy for Montella, who faces his former Sampdoria teammate Roberto Mancini on the touchline.

“It was emotional the first time we faced each other, even if it was only a friendly, and by now I’m almost used to it,” Montella noted. “This is football. My commitment remains entirely with the Turkish Football Federation and this squad as we build toward the future.”
