Zaniolo’s Serie A Return Looms as Aston Villa Opt Out of Purchase

Italian international Nicolò Zaniolo’s future seems destined for a return to Serie A after reports emerged that Aston Villa will not trigger their purchase option from Galatasaray according to Calcio Mercato.

Zaniolo, 24, joined Aston Villa on loan with an option to buy for €22.5 million plus €15.5 million in bonuses. Despite making 26 appearances, he scored only twice and rarely featured in the starting lineup.

Zaniolo has mostly been used off the bench and as a result has only played 999 minutes across all competitions.

With Villa opting out of the purchase, Zaniolo will likely return to Galatasaray who are expected to loan him out again.

Italian clubs like Juventus, Milan, Napoli, Fiorentina, and Atalanta are reportedly interested in acquiring Zaniolo on loan, showcasing his continued appeal in Serie A.

The latest development comes as a blow for Galatasaray who planned to make a profit on Zaniolo once his move to Villa became permanent but they will have to readjust their plans.

Galatasaray could decide to keep Zaniolo on at the club next season as he is under contract until 2027 or loan him again with an option to sell.

The Lions are involved in the Super Lig title race and if they do win the championship trophy they will book a place in the Champions League next term.
