Joe Ledley gave the home side the lead just after half-time and Liverpool looked down and out when James Milner got himself sent off for a second bookable offence on 62 minutes.
Liverpool did however, get themselves back into the game against the run of play when Firminho made the most of a dreadful goalkeeping error from McCarthy to equalise.
The game looked destined for a draw until Benteke scored in the fifth minute of additional time to wrap up a dramatic comeback.
