Liverpool’s experienced defender Kolo Toure has stated that Emre Can is a ‘is a midfielder first of all.’

The Ivorian international also went onto to say that Can needs more time to fully adapt to playing in defence.

“Emre is a midfielder first of all. Technically, he’s really powerful,” Toure told Liverpool FC’s official website.

“When we play three at the back, technically, he’s very good and very strong and he has quality to play at the back because he has those skills,”

“Tactically, he’s very good – he’s from Germany, so there’s no surprise about that. Technically he’s very good as well. He just needs time to adapt to this position.”

Can joined Liverpool on a £9.75 million move from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer as a central midfielder but has been playing as a defender for much of the season.

The 21-year-old has started the Reds last nine games in defence. Liverpool have not lost a game in which the Can has started in the back-three this season.

Can has one goal and one assist in 29 appearances in all competitions this season for Liverpool.

The Reds are currently fifth in the Premier League just two points off a top four spot.
