Man City summer signing returns to training in time for derby with Manchester United

Ilkay Gundogan

Manchester City’s summer signing Ilkay Gundogan looks set to return in time for the Manchester Derby against United.

According to the Daily Mail, City new boys Gundogan and Leroy Sane returned to training this week. The report states that club captain Vincent Kompany also returned to training.

Gundogan has stated that he is aiming to be fit in time for the first game against City’s bitter rivals this season.

“I’m really looking forward to training normally with the guys and I can’t wait to get going properly – but I just have to be patient for a little while longer,” Gundogan was quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.

“Maybe just after the World Cup qualifiers and perhaps the Manchester derby – that would be very nice.”

The 25-year-old is currently recovering from a knee injury he suffered while at Borussia Dortmund. Gundogan dislocated his knee during training and has been ruled out for the opening weeks of the season

City take on Manchester United at Old Trafford at on September 10.  Gundogan joined City from the Dortmund for £21 million earlier this summer and is expected to play a key role in Pep Guadiola’s midfield.
