The former Liverpool player Neil Mellor has stated that he wants Jurgen Klopp to replace Emre Can in midfield for the League Cup final today.
Mellor’s career with the Reds began in 1999 however, he only managed to make 12 appearances before leaving for Preston North End in 2006.
“I hope Lucas Leiva gets a chance to start against Manchester City on Sunday,” Mellor was quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo.
“I just feel he can do an important job for us in front of the back four with his experience and know how – and that Jurgen Klopp might prefer him to Emre Can, tough as it would be on the young German to miss out.
“If David Silva is given a central role, I think Lucas may be a better bet to help quell that threat. But we’ll see.”
Can is expected to be deployed in midfield alongside James Milner and Jordan Henderson in today’s game. Liverpool are also set to call upon Daniel Sturridge who has missed the majority of the season due to injury.
If Liverpool win on today it will be their first piece of silverware since they won the League cup back in 2012.
