Mesut Ozil has said that complacency has cost Arsenal the title this season.
The World Cup winner has revealed that the Gunners’ took the so called smaller sides lightly, thinking that their superior quality would shine through.
“I didn’t say it like that, quite the opposite. I said it’s not in our hands anymore,” Ozil told BT Sport.
“I think we did fight against the smaller teams, but in the back of your mind you think, ‘Oh, this will just happen on its own because we have this quality.’ This is how we lost some stupid points that have cost us a lot this season.”
Arsenal dropped a further two points last weekend when they gave up a 2-0 lead to draw with West Ham United.
The north London based side are 12 points behind leaders Leicester City and six points behind their bitter rivals Tottenham. Arsenal do however have a game in hand.
The Gunners host Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, kick-off is at 16:00 (GMT).
Ozil has been in impressive form this season having provided the highest number of assists in the league this season (19).
