Liverpool legend Steve Nicol: Emre Can ‘is not a defender’

Liverpool’s former defender Steve Nicol has stated that Emre Can is not a defender and should be playing in midfield. Nicol went onto say that Can doesn’t posses the skills to be a good one on one defender.

“Can on the ball is good, but he is not a defender. He is not a good one on one defender and we saw that on goal,” Nicol stated on the ESPN FC tv show.

“Had he not made the mess for the penalty kick Liverpool wins the game, but instead he cost Liverpool the game.”

Can played gave away a penalty in the 17th minute which lead to Chelsea taking the lead from the spot. The Germany U20 international received a racing of 7.12 from WhoScored.com despite his mistake.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man played on the right side of a three man defence alongside Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho. Can was the third highest rated defender in the game, making six successful tackles, one interceptions and two clearances.

The 21-year-old has made 16 appearances for the Reds this season.
